Not much more than a week ago, Konami announced the cancellation of their Kojima-Del Toro-Reedus spearheaded project, “Silent Hills”. The game was announced with one of the most successful demos released, “P.T”. However, upon rumors of Kojima’s withdrawal from Konami and the removal of P.T from the Playstation Network, it seemed more and more likely that the project was not coming along. Then Del Toro confirmed it wasn’t happening a day before Konami finally dropped the other shoe on us.

One of our correspondents reached out to Tomm Hulett, whose work on the Silent Hill franchise goes from Silent Hill: Origins to Book of Memories. Hulett’s work has shaped the modern perception of Silent Hill for better or worse. We decided to interview him about the franchise’s future as a fan and about his time as one of its main creative voices.

The Order: 1886 has the Potential to Be Something Great

When I first saw the E3 trailer for The Order: 1886, I was absolutely ecstatic. I have a very particular weakness for the aesthetic of Victorian England (though not the colonialism and the living conditions), so the lush visuals and smoky skylines of The Order: 1886’s alternate timeline London immediately caught my attention. An additional allure was the idea of fighting werewolves, territory that is surprisingly not very well trod by gaming at this point. (VtM: Bloodlines still has the scariest werewolf fights, let’s be honest). My anticipation grew with videos of gameplay, as running away from scary things while trying to shoot at them is a lifetime hobby of mine. My excitement just continued to increase, especially given how much I loved the design of Isabeau D’Argyll, and my curiosity about the world building the game would provide to explain the technology and mythology of their alternate London’s reality.

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.”

That particular saying is bandied about so frequently nowadays that I’m worried it’s actually permanently engraved into my skull, taking up valuable space I could be using to remember details about taxes and other Important Adult Skills. So as I eagerly fired up Telltale’s latest endeavor, Game of Thrones, that particular line was ringing in my ears. ‘I’m going to be fine’, I reassure myself. ‘I’ve read the books and seen the show, I know these characters better than they know themselves. I can be clever. I can be cruel to save my own life. I’m gonna rock this.’

Hello and welcome back the Brain On Airwaves podcast. It’s been quite a while since me and Jerry could sit down and talk about things and stuff but we were constrained by Real Life, the cruelest of all mistresses.  Either way, we managed to sit down and talk about one of our very favorite topics: horror design in video games. And we got a special guest, Liz!, to join us and hear our shouting about things.

Hope you have a nice sunday and, of course, that you don’t stop being spooky because of a silly date in the calendar.
